Give Big Kern Day is happening this week, giving people in Kern County the chance to give back.

The event is organized by the Kern Community Foundation and is designed to raise money and volunteer hours for local nonprofits.

According to the foundation, more than 130 agencies are registered to participate this year. The online campaign will be happening on givebigkern.org.

Give Big Kern Day is slated for Tuesday, May 1. The donation portal opened on April 1 and will remain open through May 2, according to the foundation.

Here are some of the events to look forward to on Tuesday:

  • Starting at 5 a.m., the Kern Community Foundation and participating nonprofits will be at the Liberty bell near the corner of Truxtun Avenue and Chester Avenue. The agencies will "ring in" Give Big Kern Day and Bakersfield Mayor Karen Goh will deliver a special greeting.
  • At 9 a.m., the foundation and participants will meet at the Kern County Board of Supervisors meeting at 1115 Truxtun Avenue on the 1st floor. The group will receive the County's proclamation declaring Give Big Kern Day May 1st, 2018.
  • All nine Rusty's Pizza Parlors in Bakersfield and Lamont will be donating $1 toward Give Big Kern for every sale of their Centennial Special Pizza.
  • From 5:30 to 7 p.m., the foundation and participating nonprofits will meet at Temblor Brewing Company at 3200 Buck Owens Blvd. for the Give Big Kern After Party. A leaderboard will show which agencies are leading in the online fundraising.
